Preparing the ground for the SDG Summit in 2023
Hosted by the Permanent Mission of Romania on behalf of the Friends of Governance for Sustainable Development in cooperation with the UN-DESA Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development.
The agenda for 2023 is a critical one as it will host key UN events, culminating in the SDG Summit. The second ‘2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – SDG Summit’ will be held in September 2023. It will take an honest look at the world’s situation regarding the SDGs, notably the dramatic impacts of COVID-19 and other crises on many SDGs. It will provide policy guidance and recommendations and identify new issues to regain the lost ground and move on to a track of accelerated progress towards realizing the 2030 Agenda. It should be a summit about not only review but above all about implementation. Its one-year preparatory process will be used to generate transformative actions and initiatives by all actors to achieve the SDGs. Its declaration will be informed by the assessment of independent scientists, in the form of the Global Sustainable Development Report, and the Secretary-General’s SDG progress report as well as the wealth of experiences by countries and stakeholders.
The Medium-Term Review of the ‘Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030)’ will take stock, identify emerging issues, uncover context shifts, and build coherence with other frameworks, to better address the systemic nature of risk and so realise regenerative and sustainable development. Since it was agreed in 2015, we have seen an acceleration of the impacts of climate change. The Sendai review offers a chance to focus on building back better.
The first review of the outcomes from the ‘Food System Summit’ will also take place in 2023. The world’s food systems are fragile, unexamined and vulnerable to collapse, as millions of people around the globe have experienced first-hand during the COVID-19 crisis.
This workshop will aim to conduct an initial reflection on the preparations for the SDG Summit, which are under the leadership of the President of the 77th session of the General Assembly, and on what the Summit can achieve and how. It will also consider how other processes, notably the Sendai Mid-term review and the review of the Food Systems Summit, can help to identify priorities and contribute to the SDG Summit. The workshop will also reflect on lessons that can be learned from past events on sustainable development for preparing the SDG Summit.
